Improving Human
Relationships: The Adlerian Perspective
A three-day workshop with Dr. Wes Wingett January 17, 18, 19, 2008
9 am to 4 pm
Queen’s House – 610 Taylor Street West, Saskatoon, SK
Thursday, January 17 The Development of Lifestyle
How did we get to be the way that we are? The answer to this question will
be the focus of this didactic and experiential
workshop. Through the lens of Adlerian psychology we will examine the formation
of our characteristic method of
thinking, feeling, and acting – namely our lifestyle. Topics that will
be discussed and demonstrated include the
influences of heredity and environment, family atmosphere, family values,
gender, socioeconomic status, and guiding
lines as they relate to the development of life style.
Friday, January 18 Counseling the Individual
How do I work with kids, or teenagers, or young adults, or older people? Participants
will observe and experience an
approach to counseling based on the Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler.
Alfred Adler and his followers have
developed a counseling style based on mutual respect, goal setting, respectfully
curious inquiry, and therapeutic
encouragement. These ultimately lead to an increased sense of belonging and
social usefulness. Establishing
relationships based on equality, goal setting, life style formation, Socratic
questioning, therapeutic encouragement, and
enhancing social interest will be topics stressed in this workshop.
Saturday, January 19 Working With Groups in Families, Schools, and
Communities
How can we as individuals work together to create families, schools, and communities
that work cooperatively to
ultimately contribute to a better world? This question will be addressed during
this workshop based on the psychology
developed by Alfred Adler. Family cohesiveness, responsibility, and responsiveness;
problem solving, decision
making, and encouragement of others in educational settings; and meaningful
discussion of pertinent issues in a
community setting will be the focal points of this workshop. Participants
will have the opportunity to observe and
practice a variety of skills necessary to improve relationships in families,
schools, and communities.
This series will have particular applicability to parents,
teachers, social workers, counselors, personnel workers, and all
who have an interest in understanding and helping themselves and others. Each
day can either be a stand-alone
experience or part of a three-day package. For those interested in
furthering their Adlerian studies, this will be part
of a series of learning activities leading to a SAS 100-Hour Studies Certificate.
